Whey Protein vs Vegan Protein: which is better?

To Whey or not to Whey? That is the question. If you’re looking for a protein powder to supplement your gainz, you may be trying to decide between a whey protein or a vegan protein. Here’s some info so you can make the best decision for you!

Why Protein? 

Why take protein? The answer is simple. If you are working out consistently, putting your body through intense workouts, if you are sore on a regular basis, your muscles are getting worked. Muscles themselves are fueled by protein, and therefore they need protein in order to repair and strengthen. Chances are you are getting a good amount of protein in your diet already, but in order to maintain the full, plump looking muscle tone, you want to supplement your protein by taking a protein powder. Simply put, if you do not have enough protein in your diet, your muscles will begin to use themselves as energy to continue repairing, and that’s when you get that flat, gaunt look. Protein powders are going to be proportionally low calorie, high protein which is excellent, because that means they are easy to take down and won’t fill you up too much. 

Whey Protein - what is it?

Whey protein is one of the most popular nutritional supplements on the market for body sculpting. It is considered a “complete protein,” which means it contains all 9 Essential Amino Acids. These essential aminos are not naturally produced by the body and therefore we need to obtain these aminos from outside food sources. 

Whey protein is readily available and is relatively inexpensive. And that is because Whey protein is made from the separation of milk liquid from milk solids. Because of this reason, whey protein is derived from an animal-based product and IS NOT vegan. This allows for a wide variety of flavors like Cinnamon Toast Crunch and Oreo Milkshake. Mmmmmm.

Vegan Protein - what is it

If you are a vegan and you have an active lifestyle, you need to add a protein supplement to your diet. It’s a must, because although nuts, beans, and grains contain protein, they don’t contain a large amount in proportion to the amount of carbs or fat. Vegan proteins are typically made from lentils, peas, or seeds. Because the vegan proteins are plant based, they typically will not supply all of your amino acid needs. 

Unfortunately, you won’t be able to find as many tempting flavors when looking at Vegan proteins. It will be mostly vanilla or chocolate based. 

What does HT take?

Personally, I use vegan protein. Overtime I’ve cut out most dairy products from my diet because I would like to avoid the inflammation lactose causes. I also am perfectly fine with basic flavors like vanilla and chocolate. Lastly, I try to keep my diet as clean as possible, meaning keeping my processed foods to a minimum. Whey protein is derived from a process involving the separation of liquids and solids - it is by nature more processed than vegan protein. Below you will find my top 2 vegan proteins.
